America to benefit from met coal provision in OBBBA

Charleston, W.Va. – America’s Coal Associations, comprised of state and national advocates of thermal and metallurgical coal, proudly embraces a provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that expands a tax credit for advanced manufacturing to include metallurgical coal used in the production of steel, consistent with the Department of Energy’s classification of met coal at a critical mineral.

Chris Hamilton, President of the West Virginia Coal Association, the nation’s largest metallurgical coal producing state, said “The inclusion of metallurgical coal as a critical mineral for advanced manufacturing within the President’s tax bill is a game changer for West Virginia and the tens of thousands of met miners and mines that support jobs throughout our state.  We applaud Congress for including this provision in the bill and President Trump for his unwavering push for a rational, domestic energy policy that values coal.”

“Without the met coal our miners produce right here in Alabama, our country would be forced to import this critical steel-making ingredient that builds, defends, and supports America.” said Paul Kavinoky, President of the Alabama Mining Association. “In addition to the met mining jobs throughout our country, America’s Coal Associations collectively assist in supporting nearly a million steel jobs throughout the country.”

Rachel Gleason, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Coal Alliance, underscored that Pennsylvania producers annually provide over 3 million tons of met coal, or coking coal, to domestic steel manufacturing companies, which is critical to our nation’s national security, national defense, infrastructure and manufacturing.

Brian Sommers, who heads up the Utah Coal Association, asserted that met coal is also a vital mineral found within the state of Utah, which supplies needed sources of western met coal for domestic use and exports.

Paul Kavinoky also said this action is well-timed as met coal producers face unprecedented challenges with China dumping excessive amounts of cheap steel across Europe and trade wars intensifying throughout the free world.”

America’s Coal Associations is comprised of state coal associations and coal advocacy groups that collectively account for nearly a half million American Jobs and over $300 billion in annual economic activity across the nation.
